Maitland

Maitland is the doorway to the Hunter Valley wine region. Two hours from Sydney and just a hop to the west of Newcastle, Maitland sits at the south-eastern tip of Australia’s famous Hunter Valley. This world-renowned wine-making region was established over 180 years ago, and produces some of the country’s top labels.

The climate in Maitland has been compared to that of the Mediterranean, from the sun-soaked summers that reach 30 degrees Celsius to the moderate winters that rarely drop below 20 degrees Celsius. Rainfall is at its peak during the mid-year months, though the rest of the year sees only half as much.

Maitland Local Area

At the 2011 census it had approximately 67,478 inhabitants, spread over an area of 390.2 square kilometres (151 sq mi), with most of the population located in a strip along the New England Highway between the suburbs of Rutherford and Metford respectively. The city centre is located on the right bank of the Hunter River, protected from potential flooding by a levee.

The Hunter valley produces world class wines such as Chardonnay and Shiraz from a dazzling array of master wineries. All within a short distance from the centre of Maitland. There are over 120 more vineyards in the area with a plethora of activities available to make a wine tour through Maitland and the Hunter Valley a unique and unforgettable experience.
